Advantech WISE-2200-MEA – wireless connection of RS-485 devices to LoRaWAN
Advantech WISE-2200-MEA is a compact industrial communication module that enables devices with an RS-485 interface and Modbus/RTU protocol to be integrated into a LoRaWAN infrastructure. The MEA variant is designed for the EU868band, allowing it to act as a wireless data collection point for meters, analyzers, sensors and controllers used in industrial installations.
The module supports up to 128 Modbus addresses and 30 rules, enabling a single node to read multiple registers and organize data transmission without extending a separate Ethernet network to every measurement point.
The wide 5–50 V DCpower input range, compact enclosure and industrial operating-temperature range make the WISE-2200-MEA suitable for both new Industrial IoT systems and modernization of existing installations.
Existing Modbus devices as LoRaWAN nodes
WISE-2200-MEA was designed as a bridge between conventional serial communication and an LPWAN network. The RS-485 port reads Modbus/RTU devices, while the LoRaWAN layer forwards the collected information to a gateway and then to the supervisory system.
This approach is especially useful where measurement devices are already installed but adding a new communication bus would be expensive, difficult or require lengthy plant downtime. The module lets you keep the field device and change only the way its data is delivered.
Remote data acquisition from Modbus devices
- electricity, water, gas and utility meters with an RS-485 interface,
- industrial Modbus/RTU sensors and transmitters,
- upgrading distributed measurement points without building a new wired network,
- telemetry in manufacturing plants, technical infrastructure and distributed facilities,
- energy-management and utility-monitoring systems,
- Industrial IoT projects requiring data transmission to a LoRaWAN network.
Less cabling between the device and the supervisory system
In practice, WISE-2200-MEA can be installed close to an existing RS-485 bus and use LoRaWAN as a wireless link to the gateway. This reduces cabling work and simplifies deployment of telemetry across large facilities.
Compact dimensions of approximately 71 × 52 × 30 mm excluding the antenna and an operating range from -25 to 70°C allow the module to be installed in typical automation cabinets and enclosures.

A simple way to read existing Modbus devices wirelessly
WISE-2200-MEA lets you use existing RS-485 devices in a modern LoRaWAN architecture. Data from distributed meters and sensors can reach the monitoring system without replacing field devices or expanding the wired communication network.
