Milesight UG56-L08GL-868M — industrial LoRaWAN® gateway with 4G LTE
Milesight UG56-L08GL-868M is a compact industrial LoRaWAN® gateway designed to connect large numbers of wireless IoT devices to higher-level systems via Ethernet, Wi-Fi or a 4G LTE cellular network.
Variant L08GL-868M combines the current Milesight cellular communication module with support for the European LoRaWAN® EU868 plan. It is the current successor to the earlier UG56-L04EU and UG56-L04AU variants discontinued by the manufacturer in 2025.
Compact gateway for industrial and building IoT networks
Approximately 2000 devices
The 8-channel LoRaWAN® concentrator supports extensive networks of Class A, B and C devices.
Ethernet, Wi-Fi and 4G
Multiple backhaul communication methods and WAN Failover increase deployment flexibility and connection availability.
Integration with BMS and IoT
MQTT, HTTP, BACnet and Modbus enable LoRaWAN® data to be forwarded directly to IoT platforms, BMS, SCADA and PLC systems.
LoRaWAN® connectivity for industry and smart buildings
8 channels and support for approximately 2000 devices
The UG56 has 8-channel LoRaWAN® concentrator operating in half-duplex modefunction.
According to the current manufacturer specification, the gateway can support approximately 2000 Class A/B/C devices with an uplink interval of approximately 10 minutes.
Receiver sensitivity reaches −140 dBm at 292 bps, while the maximum transmit power is 27 dBm.
Variant for the European EU868 network
Variant 868M supports the IN865, EU868 and RU864 frequency plans.
For installations in Poland, the appropriate frequency plan is EU868function.
External SMA Female 50 Ω connector
The UG56 has 1 external SMA Female connector with 50 Ω impedance intended for the LoRaWAN® antenna.
This makes it possible to select the antenna for the specific facility and required radio coverage characteristics.
For the UG56, Milesight offers both a compact magnetic antenna and external GA01 antennas 60 or 130 cm long.
Network Server directly in the gateway
The UG56 has built-in LoRaWAN® Network Server, allowing it to manage end devices independently.
The built-in codec library supports Milesight devices, and users can also create their own codecs for third-party devices.
This allows data to be decoded and ready-to-use values to be forwarded directly to the higher-level platform.
Central management of a larger gateway network
Function Gateway Fleet enables one gateway to be used as a Network Server for other compatible Milesight gateways.
The remaining devices can operate as agent gateways extending the LoRaWAN® coverage area, without the need to maintain a separate Network Server for each location.
Noise Analyzer, Packet Filter, retransmission, multicast and FUOTA
Noise Analyzer enables analysis of radio interference levels and helps select appropriate LoRaWAN® channels.
Packet Filter allows packets to be filtered using whitelists and blacklists, while Data Retransmission allows data to be resent after the network connection is restored.
The built-in Network Server also supports Multicast and FUOTA for compatible end devices.
MQTT, HTTP, BACnet and Modbus
Data from LoRaWAN® devices can be forwarded to higher-level systems via MQTT(S) and HTTP(S)function.
The UG56 also supports BACnet/IP, BACnet/SC, Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU over TCPfunction.
This allows the gateway to serve as an integration layer between wireless IoT devices and a BMS, PLC, SCADA or cloud platform.
4G LTE cellular communication
Variant UG56-L08GL-868M is equipped with the optional 4G LTEfunction.
cellular communication interface. Milesight introduced the L08GL model as the current variant replacing the older UG56-L04EU and UG56-L04AU versions.
The modem has separate SMA Female 50 Ω antenna connector and a Mini SIM 2FFfunction.
Fast Ethernet with PoE support
The UG56 has 1 RJ45 10/100Base-T portfunction.
The interface supports Auto MDI/MDIX, automatic speed detection and Full/Half Duplex operation.
The port also serves as IEEE 802.3af PoE PD, enabling data transmission and power delivery over a single Ethernet cable.
2,4 GHz Wi-Fi in AP or Client mode
The gateway has Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11b/g/n 2,4 GHz with an internal antenna.
The interface can operate as Access Point or Client, allowing it to be used both for local configuration and as an additional network connection.
WPA/WPA2 Enterprise mechanisms are also supported in Client mode.
Automatic use of an alternative connection
The UG56 supports the WAN Failoverfunction.
Ethernet, Wi-Fi and 4G LTE can be used as independent communication channels according to the installation configuration.
If the primary connection is lost, the gateway can switch communication to the configured backup link.
Quad-Core Cortex-A35, Node-RED and Python SDK
UG56 uses 64-bit, quad-core ARM Cortex-A35 1,3 GHz processorfunction.
Available are 512 MB DDR3 RAM, 8 GB eMMC memory and an internal Micro SD slotfunction.
Support for Node-RED and Python SDK enables custom flows, local data processing and additional integrations directly on the gateway.
Advanced network features for industrial installations
The UG56 supports OpenVPN, IPsec, PPTP, L2TP, GRE, DMVPN and WireGuardfunction.
The built-in firewall provides Access Control, DMZ, Port Mapping/DNAT, MAC Binding and IP address and domain filtering.
The device also supports multi-level user permissions and secure administration protocols.
Web, CLI, SNMP, API and Milesight platforms
Configuration and diagnostics can be performed via Web, CLI via SSH/Telnet, SMS, SNMP, HTTP API and MQTT APIfunction.
Remote device management and updates are supported by Milesight Development Platform and DeviceHubfunction.
Diagnostic tools include Ping, Traceroute, Tcpdump, QXDM and Log Server.
PoE or USB-C 5 V
The UG56 can be powered via IEEE 802.3af PoE through the Ethernet port.
Alternatively, the device can use the USB Type-C 5 V / 2 Aport, which also serves as a console port.
Typical power consumption is approximately 1,8 W, with a maximum of 6,9 W.
Compact industrial metal enclosure
The UG56 has a black metal enclosure with an IP30 degree of protection.
Device dimensions are 110 × 75 × 24 mm, and the weight is approximately 186 gfunction.
The gateway can be placed on a surface or mounted on a wall. Newer hardware versions also support DIN-rail mounting.
