Milesight UC502-868M EA — battery-powered LoRaWAN® controller for industrial sensor integration
Milesight UC502-868M in the EA version is an industrial IoT controller designed to collect data from wired sensors, meters, transducers and communication devices and transmit it to the higher-level system via LoRaWAN®.
The device combines in one enclosure 2 GPIO ports, 2 analogue inputs, switchable port RS232/RS485, support for Modbus RTU and interface SDI-12 V1.4. This enables many types of field devices to be integrated without separate converters and communication modules.
UC502 has been designed for long-term autonomous operation. Power is provided by 3 replaceable ER26500 Li-SOCl₂ batteries, 9000 mAh each, while alternatively the device can use an external 5–24 V DC source. The EA — External Antenna version additionally has an SMA connector for an external LoRaWAN® antenna.
One controller for multiple signal standards
Multiple interfaces
GPIO, analogue inputs, RS232/RS485 and SDI-12 allow different sensors and devices to be integrated at one telemetry point.
3 × 9000 mAh
Three replaceable Li-SOCl₂ batteries enable autonomous operation in locations without permanent power infrastructure.
IP68
The sealed enclosure and M12 connectors enable the controller to be installed in demanding outdoor environments.
Data acquisition from distributed field devices
2 programmable digital ports
UC502 has 2 GPIO ports, which can be configured by software as digital inputs, digital outputs or pulse counters.
This enables contact states, alarm signals and meter pulses to be monitored or basic control of external devices to be performed.
In Pulse Counter mode, the manufacturer recommends an input signal frequency not exceeding 4000 Hzfunction.
2 channels 4–20 mA or 0–10 V
The controller has 2 analogue inputs with 12-bit resolution.
Each channel can be switched by software between 4–20 mA and 0–10 V, enabling direct operation with common industrial transmitters.
UC502 can therefore collect values from pressure, level, temperature, humidity, flow and other process-variable transmitters.
Integration of serial devices and Modbus RTU
One serial port can be configured by software as RS232 or RS485function.
The RS485 interface supports transparent communication and Modbus RTU, enabling data collection from meters, analysers, inverters, controllers and other industrial devices.
Supported transmission speeds range from 1200–115200 bpsfunction.
Direct integration of environmental sensors
UC502 has 1 SDI-12 interface compliant with version SDI-12 V1.4function.
The SDI-12 standard is widely used in environmental, hydrological and agricultural monitoring devices, so the controller can integrate weather, soil-quality, water-level and other field instruments.
The interface also supports transparent transmission.
Programmable 3,3 V and 5/9/12 V outputs
UC502 can supply power to connected sensors without requiring a separate energy source for each device.
Available are 2 outputs 3,3 V and 2 switchable 5 V / 9 V / 12 V outputsfunction.
3,3 V can be continuously available, while for 5/9/12 V outputs the advance power-on time before data acquisition can be set within the range 0–10 minutes. This allows the sensor to be powered only when a measurement is being taken, reducing battery consumption.
Long-range data transmission in the EU868 band
Variant 868M supports the EU868, IN865 and RU864function.
For the 868 MHz band, the maximum transmit power is 16 dBm, while receiver sensitivity reaches −137 dBm at 300 bpsfunction.
UC502 operates as a LoRaWAN® OTAA/ABP Class A, reducing energy demand and matching long-term battery operation.
External LoRaWAN® antenna via SMA 50 Ω
Designation EA — External Antenna indicates the UC502 version equipped with an external antenna connector.
The controller has 1 × SMA Female 50 Ω, enabling use of a suitable LoRaWAN® antenna positioned in a more favourable location than the device itself.
The solution is particularly useful where the controller is located close to the ground, in a chamber, behind an obstacle or in another location that impairs radio-signal propagation.
3 replaceable 9000 mAh batteries or 5–24 V DC
The primary energy source for UC502 is 3 replaceable ER26500 Li-SOCl₂ batteries with a capacity of 9000 mAh eachfunction.
The controller can also be powered with external voltage 5–24 V DC via the M12 connector.
When an external source and batteries are connected simultaneously, the device prioritises external power. In UC502, the external voltage is not used to charge the Li-SOCl₂ batteriesfunction.
Threshold alarms and value-change alarms
UC502 can generate Threshold Alarm when the configured limit value is exceeded.
Function Change Alarm also allows a response to a specified change in value relative to the previous measurement.
These mechanisms enable faster reporting of important events without transmitting data at a very short fixed interval.
Local storage and data retransmission after connectivity is restored
UC502 has local memory for storing measurement records.
In the current documentation for the LoRaWAN® version, the manufacturer specifies storage of up to 600 records, later reading and retransmission.
The function helps reduce the risk of data loss during temporary gateway or LoRaWAN® network availability problems.
NFC, USB Type-C and remote configuration
Basic UC502 configuration can be performed wirelessly via NFC using the Milesight ToolBox application.
Inside the enclosure there is also a port USB Type-C intended for configuration and the service console, and a Power/Reset button.
Settings can also be transmitted remotely via LoRaWAN® downlink messages.
IP68 and temperature range −30…+70°C
UC502 uses a sealed enclosure and industrial M12 connectors designed for demanding field installations.
The IP68 was defined by the manufacturer for test conditions involving immersion at a depth of 1 m for 7 daysfunction.
The operating temperature range is from −30 to +70°C, and permissible relative humidity from 0 to 95% non-condensing.
Compact design for wall or pole installation
The UC502 enclosure dimensions are 116 × 116 × 45,5 mm, excluding protruding connectors.
The manufacturer provides for mounting the device both on a wall and on a pole, making it easier to place the controller directly beside the supported sensors.
